Is my business on ChatGPT? How to check in 2 minutes (and what to do if it isn't)

August 11, 2026

Here's the fastest way to check: open ChatGPT and ask it two questions. First, "What are the best {your category} near {your city}? Give specific business names." Second, "Tell me about {your business name} in {your city}. Would you recommend it?" Two minutes, no tools needed.

There are three possible outcomes, and each one tells you something different.

What the results mean

  • Named and accurate: AI can find you. Your job now is staying recommended, not becoming visible.
  • Named but wrong (old address, wrong hours, confused with another business): AI found conflicting data about you. This is often worse than being invisible, because customers act on the wrong information.
  • Not named at all: AI has no confident data connecting your business to your category and area. When 45% of consumers ask AI for recommendations, this means you're not in the conversation.

Why ChatGPT doesn't know your business

AI engines don't crawl the world the way you experience it. They rely on machine-readable signals, and most local business websites simply don't have them. The four things that matter most:

  • Structured data (schema.org LocalBusiness markup): invisible to humans, it's the first thing machines read to learn what you are, where you are, and when you're open.
  • Name, address, and phone consistency: if your website, Google Business Profile, Yelp, and Foursquare disagree about your phone number, AI treats you as unreliable and skips you.
  • Location signals: if your homepage title never mentions your city, AI can't confidently recommend you for "near me" searches.
  • Crawlability: some website firewalls block AI crawlers entirely. Your site may be literally unreadable to the systems making recommendations.

The five fixes, in order of impact

  1. Add LocalBusiness schema to your homepage with your exact name, address, phone, and hours (about 20 lines of code; your web person will know what this means).
  2. Put your city and service in your page title, like "Smith Plumbing | Emergency Plumber in Austin".
  3. Make your name, address, and phone exactly identical on your site, Google Business Profile, Yelp, and Foursquare.
  4. Add an FAQ page answering the 5-10 questions customers actually ask, marked up with FAQPage schema. AI engines quote FAQ answers almost verbatim.
  5. Check that your site doesn't block AI crawlers (ask whoever manages your firewall about GPTBot and ClaudeBot).

Fixing all five is an afternoon of work, and most of your local competitors haven't done any of them. If you want the full picture first, our free audit checks 16 signals in about 15 seconds and shows you exactly what's broken.

Common questions

Can I pay ChatGPT or OpenAI to list my business?

No. There is no paid placement in ChatGPT's recommendations. AI engines recommend businesses based on the data they can read, which is why machine-readable signals matter.

How long until fixes show up in AI answers?

There's no fixed schedule. AI systems refresh their knowledge of the web on rolling cycles, so expect weeks to months. Directory updates (Yelp, Foursquare) often propagate faster than website changes.

Is this the same as SEO?

It overlaps. Good technical SEO helps, but AI visibility depends more heavily on structured data, data consistency across directories, and quotable content than classic ranking factors do.
