ChatGPT recommends only ~1% of local businesses. Here's what they do differently

August 11, 2026

We ran our 16-signal visibility audit on ten well-known independent businesses: famous delis, barbecue joints, bakeries, barbershops. Scores ranged from 26 to 82 out of 100, and the spread had almost nothing to do with how successful the businesses are offline.

A century-old deli with lines around the block scored 49. An iconic bakery scored 26. Meanwhile the top scorers weren't bigger or richer; their websites just told machines the truth about what they are.

The three habits of AI-visible businesses

  1. They ship LocalBusiness structured data. Every business that scored above 70 had schema.org markup; every business below 55 had none. It's roughly 20 lines of code, and it's the strongest single predictor we've seen.
  2. Their data agrees with itself. Same name, same address, same phone on the website, Google, Yelp, and Foursquare. AI engines cross-check sources, and disagreement reads as unreliability.
  3. They publish answers, not just vibes. FAQ content with concrete details (prices, hours, policies) gives AI something safe to quote. Beautiful photography doesn't; machines can't eat.

The trap nobody checks: blocking the crawlers

One nationally famous pizza chain in our test set couldn't be audited at all: its firewall blocks automated visitors, including the crawlers AI engines rely on. It is paying for SEO while being unreadable to the fastest-growing search channel.

One-minute check: ask whoever manages your website whether your firewall or CDN blocks GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or PerplexityBot. If they don't know, that's worth a look.

The first-mover math

The overwhelming majority of local businesses are invisible to AI, including most of your competitors. In most towns and categories nobody has done this work yet. Be sceptical of anyone (us included) who turns that into a promise: when we tested twelve local businesses, the ones with excellent markup were no more likely to be recommended than the ones without. One practice scoring 97/100 was unknown to both engines. What being machine-readable buys you is that when an AI does read your site, it can tell what you are, where you are, and when you're open. That's a prerequisite, not a purchase order.

Common questions

Where does the ~1% figure come from?

Treat it as an order of magnitude, not a census. We can't point you to a definitive published count, so here is our own measurement instead. In August 2026 we asked ChatGPT and Claude for the best dentist, plumber, auto shop, and salon across four US cities, then checked whether the real local businesses in those cities were ever named. Zero of the twelve we tested were named, and none were recognised when asked about by name. That's a small sample, but it's ours and it's repeatable.

My business is successful without AI. Why should I care?

Because the customers you're not seeing don't call to tell you. 45% of consumers now ask AI for recommendations, and that number grew from 6% in about a year. Visibility problems compound quietly.
