AI search optimization for local businesses: the plain-English guide
August 11, 2026
Consumer AI search adoption went from 6% to 45% in about a year. When someone asks an AI assistant for "the best dentist near me," the answer names three to five businesses and stops. There is no page two. You're either in the answer or you don't exist.
The good news: AI visibility for local businesses is mostly a data problem, not a marketing problem, and the bar is currently very low because almost nobody has done the work.
What AI engines can actually read
AI engines can't see your signage, taste your food, or feel your customer service. They read: your website's structured data and text, your listings on directories they trust (Google Business Profile, Yelp, Foursquare, Apple Maps), and content that answers questions directly.
That's the whole game. Every fix below makes one of those three channels cleaner.
The checklist, grouped
- Identity markup: schema.org LocalBusiness JSON-LD with name, address, phone, geo coordinates, and opening hours. This is the single highest-impact fix.
- Location signals: your city in the page title and main headline, a full street address in the footer, an embedded map.
- Answerable content: an FAQ page with real questions and concrete answers, marked up with FAQPage schema. Include real prices where you can; AI loves concrete numbers.
- Technical basics: HTTPS, a descriptive title under 70 characters, a meta description, one H1, a sitemap, and a robots.txt that doesn't block crawlers.
- Directory consistency: identical name, address, and phone everywhere. One mismatched digit is a trust penalty.
Where the settings hide on common platforms
- WordPress: SEO plugins (Yoast, Rank Math) generate LocalBusiness schema from a settings form.
- Squarespace: Settings → SEO fills most basics; schema markup usually needs a code-injection block.
- Wix: SEO settings cover titles and descriptions; use the structured-data section for LocalBusiness markup.
What NOT to pay for
Be skeptical of agencies selling monthly "AI SEO" retainers for what is mostly one-time work. Schema markup, directory cleanup, and an FAQ page are set-once, revisit-quarterly tasks. Recurring spend only makes sense once you're competing on content, not fixing data.

Common questions
Do I need different optimization for ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Claude?
No. They read the same public signals: structured data, directories, and site content. Fix the data once and every engine benefits.
Does Google Business Profile still matter for AI search?
Yes, heavily. Directory data is a primary source for AI local recommendations, and Google Business Profile is the biggest directory of all. Claim it and keep it identical to your website.
